What drink should I start with? What would be an appropriate first post for this blog? Hmmm…

GinabooWhy not a tribute to my mother? I named this drink after her. I didn’t make it up, though. The recipe came with the liqueur bottle, but I decided to give it a clever name.

To be honest, she likes the drink, but it is not necessarily her favorite drink in the world. I actually like it quite a bit. It is simple and refreshing, a good summer drink.

Combine Drambuie with ginger ale in a glass of ice. Garnish with a slice of lime.

Drambuie is a honey-sweetened, scotch-based, herbal liqueur. For a liqueur, the alcohol content is pretty high: 40% (80 proof), so it packs a punch. Drambuie is actually pretty good all by itself, and complements a cigar quite nicely. It has a very complex and delicious but hard-to-put-your-finger-on flavor. Anise? Coriander? Hard to say. The recipe is a closely guarded secret. But there must be a rabbi out there that knows what it is, because Drambuie is kosher-certified by the London Beth Din. (Their symbol is the letters KLBD beneath a vaulted roof shape.)
